Coastal Yachtmaster Practical and Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation
The aim of this course is to teach the skills and techniques required to
skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and passages by day and night.
It is not suitable for the beginner and applicants are strongly advised
to have completed a Coastal Yachtmaster shorebased course and a Day Skipper
practical before enroling. Applicants who have not completed these will
not be able to complete
all the learning outcomes in the time available. The course teaches:
• passage planning including customs procedure
• preparation for extended passages
• pilotage - entering unfamiliar harbours by day or by night
• operational procedures for VHF communications
• passage making and skippering
• handling under power - all berthing/unberthing manoeuvres
• handling under sail - on/off moorings, anchor, pontoons
• preparation for heavy weather, handling in strong winds
• coping with emergency situations
