Diesel Courses
The RYA diesel course was worked out jointly with the RNLI
and Maritime Coastguard Agency when it came to light that, in most cases of mechanical breakdown at sea, the problem was resolved within 20 minutes of getting an engineer to the vessel.

The diesel engine course is devised to aid the boatowner who has little
or no knowledge of engines. It aims to provide enough basic knowledge to
enable yachtsmen carry out simple engine servicing tasks and to undertake
basic repairs that do not require workshop support. It assumes no previous
knowledge. The syllabus inlcudes the following:
      • principles of the diesel engine
      • the four-stroke cycle
      • the fuel system
      • the cooling system
      • the air systems
      • engine electrical systems
      • spares and tool requirements
      • winterisation and servicing
      • basic fault finding
